Another train derailment in Spain: Driver killed, 14 injured

Another railway tragedy has been recorded in Spain, two days after the one in Andalusia, where a train driver lost his life and at least 14 passengers were injured after a railway accident in Catalonia.

According to local reports, a Rodalies train derailed after colliding with a retaining wall that fell onto the tracks while traveling between Gelida and Sant Sadurní on Tuesday night.

Emergency services are currently assessing the severity of the injuries to passengers, some of whom have been hospitalized. 11 ambulances have been sent to the scene, while fire crews have sent a total of 35 teams to rescue passengers trapped inside the train.

The accident happened as severe storms were sweeping across northern Spain, including the Catalonia region, where emergency services were on high alert. The coast and northwestern part of Spain are also on alert due to bad weather conditions, with storms and snowfall hitting the Pyrenees and Menorca, causing waves up to several metres high.

The incident comes two days after another tragic rail accident in southern Andalusia, where two high-speed trains collided in Adamuz, leaving 42 dead and many more injured. It has raised concerns about the safety of rail transport in Spain, sparking a wave of reactions and calls for increased safety measures.

Local authorities in Catalonia continue to work to manage the consequences of the accident and provide support to the injured and their families.
