Iran shuts down 40,000 Starlink connections to hinder internet access

Iranian security authorities have deactivated 40,000 Starlink networks, Elon Musk's satellite-based internet access system, the state broadcaster reported.
It is not clear whether the equipment was confiscated or deactivated. For days, the government has described the recent mass protests against its authoritarian policies as foreign-led and now appears to have partly blamed Starlink.
The Iranian leadership has accused its sworn enemies, Israel and the United States, of "terrorist activities."
Starlink is a network of thousands of satellites, and users require a special antenna that acts as a router to connect to the internet.
The system is banned in Iran, but it is believed that around 50,000 terminals have entered the country through secret routes.
Users in Iran face years in prison. Antennas must have a clear view of the sky and their signals must be localized. Since January 8, the Iranian population has been largely cut off from the internet.
