Trump wants Greenland, Moscow reacts: The island is not a natural part of

Russia appears to be taking advantage of the clash between the United States and Europe over Greenland.

As Trump's rhetoric towards European leaders escalates, Moscow is not missing an opportunity to intervene.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commented that Greenland was not a natural part of Denmark, while saying that the problem of former colonial territories was becoming increasingly acute.

"Greenland, in principle, is not a natural part of Denmark, is it? It was neither part of Norway nor of Denmark. It is a colonial occupation. The fact that the inhabitants are now used to this and feel comfortable is another matter," Lavrov said.

But as the rifts between the transatlantic allies have emboldened Moscow, it has denied suggestions it is seeking to control the island. Lavrov said during Tuesday's press conference that Russia has no interest in interfering in the Greenland issue, nor in taking it.

He added that there is "no doubt" that Washington knows that Russia "has no connection" to Greenland.

Lavrov stressed that there is "no evidence" that Russia would aim to invade Greenland, while adding that his country would "monitor the serious geopolitical situation," according to the BBC.

The Russian foreign minister has attacked Britain, which he has declared the main enemy for its strong support for Ukraine. According to Lavrov, Britain has no reason to call itself "great".

"No offense, but I think it should just be called 'Britain.' Because with 'Great Britain,' this is the only time in history when a country calls itself 'great,'" he said.

Russia accuses London of working hard behind the scenes to undermine Moscow's interests around the world, while imposing Soviet-style restrictions on British diplomats.

While ruling out the possibility of reaching any agreement with European leaders, Lavrov expressed his readiness for cooperation with the US regarding the Balkans, on what is happening in Bosnia, but also in other countries.
