Scott Bessent warns EU: Sit down, breathe, and don't consider tariff retaliation

The recommendation to European governments to show calm and not retaliate was reiterated by United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, referring to Donald Trump's plan to control Greenland.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Bessent urged European leaders to "keep an open mind," stressing that escalation would be, as he said, the worst possible scenario for them.
"I say to everyone: Sit down, take a deep breath and don't think about retaliation against tariffs. The president will be here tomorrow and he will deliver his message himself ," Bessent said.
Scott Bessent stressed that "the worst thing countries can do is escalate against the United States," warning of the consequences of such a stance on transatlantic relations.
Referring to Greenland, the American minister emphasized that its strategic value has been a concern for Washington for decades.
