"EU integration is blocked", Malaj: The majority's defense of

Former Socialist MP Arben Malaj has declared that Albania's European integration process has been halted, linking this to the decision-making of the parliamentary majority on the case of former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku.

Invited to the Studio24 show on News24 , Malaj said: "For me, integration has been blocked for Albania since the moment the SP blocked the decision on Balluk."

According to him, SPAK's request had reasonable alternatives for the security measure: "SPAK has been careful, giving her two options, prison or house arrest. Okay, she's a lady and she shouldn't be arrested in prison, but the SP could allow house arrest, there's nothing wrong with that."

Malaj also raised doubts about the reasons for the refusal, adding: "Perhaps Rama was afraid that the same measure would be requested for him. This decision destroyed the bridge to the EU and the only way for the bridge to continue is for the Prime Minister to resign."

He stressed that the resignation should not be seen as something extraordinary: "It's not a big mistake. People have been war heroes and they haven't won elections, it's not a big deal. We connect everything to it."

Speaking about the criteria for membership in the European Union, Malaj said that Albania has stalled in terms of democracy: "The membership process has its criteria. The first is democracy, the economy and cultural minorities. We are stuck at the first point."

Regarding the justice reform, he added: "There was indeed a justice reform, Rama did not hinder the reform, not that he did. I don't know that 100% of the parliament approves a law, it was the intervention of international partners."
