The Hydrometeorological Institute issues an alarm, warns of possible flooding in

Some parts of Kosovo may face flooding as rainfall is forecast on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, the Kosovo Hydrometeorological Institute warned.

In a Facebook post, the institute said it had raised the alert to yellow, which means the weather is "potentially dangerous."

While water levels in rivers across the country have decreased for now, after they overflowed their banks causing flooding in parts of the country earlier in the week, water levels are expected to rise again, the announcement said.

Rainfall is expected in the eastern, northeastern, central and southern parts of the country.

They are expected to affect the rise in levels in the Morava e Binça River with its main tributary Kriva Reka, which could cause flooding.

"Such a situation will also dominate in other parts of the country, especially the north-eastern part (Llapi Basin), central (Sitnica) and southern (Lepenci Basin)," the announcement states.

This warning comes after earlier this week, the country's capital, Pristina, suspended classes in all schools in the city on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding.

On Monday and Tuesday, minor flooding was reported in parts of the country, which did not cause any casualties or major damage.

Kosovo has faced floods in recent years, which have mainly caused material damage.

It is estimated that damage to river beds, as a result of illegal gravel extraction, contributes greatly to the flooding of areas./REL
