Macron calls on Israel for direct talks with Lebanon, offers Paris as mediation

French President Emmanuel Macron called on Israel to accept direct talks with the Lebanese authorities and all political components of the country, offering to hold these negotiations in Paris.

In a reaction on the social network X, Macron stressed that everything must be done to prevent Lebanon from plunging into chaos. He demanded that Hezbollah immediately stop its attacks, while Israel abandon a large-scale offensive and stop the massive bombing that has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes. Macron announced that he had held a telephone conversation with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. According to him, the Lebanese leadership has expressed its readiness to engage in direct dialogue with Israel. The French president stressed that Israel should use this opportunity to establish a ceasefire and find a lasting solution that will allow the Lebanese authorities to implement their commitments to the country's sovereignty.

Meanwhile, tensions in the region remain high after Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into the conflict on March 2, firing rockets into Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during Israeli-American attacks on Iran. Since then, Israel has intensified its bombing of Lebanese territory and has warned of expanding military operations. In a televised speech, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem declared that the organization is prepared for a "long conflict," adding to concerns about further escalation of the war in the region.
