Two women who had gone skiing on Sunday in the La Chapelle d'Abondance region of Haute-Savoie in eastern France were found dead covered in snow on Sunday, bringing the number of people killed in avalanches since the start of the season to 30.
The two women did not show up for work on Monday morning, prompting the mobilization of friends and colleagues.
Their car was found near a ski resort and a helicopter later detected signals from the transceivers at a point where an avalanche had occurred.
Rescue teams found the women 'buried' in the snow, "at a depth of 50 meters and 1.5 meters respectively", according to local authorities who had warned of a "considerable" risk of avalanches in the area.
