Trump's company plans Australia's tallest skyscraper, 335 meters high

The Trump Organization, the company of US President Donald Trump, has announced plans to build a skyscraper in Australia that his son Eric says will be the country’s tallest building. The tower, to be built on Queensland’s Gold Coast, will reach a height of 335 metres (1,100 feet), making it taller than the Shard in London. The project marks the firm’s first official venture in Australia, aiming to bring “the prestige and allure of a world-class luxury brand” to the country, according to Eric Trump, executive vice president of the Trump Organization.

The project, called Trump International Hotel & Tower, Gold Coast, is expected to cost at least $1 billion (£740 million). Construction on the 91-storey tower is set to begin in August, according to the hotel's developer, Altus Property Group. The building will include 285 hotel rooms and 272 luxury residential apartments. It will also offer space for high-end retailers and restaurants, as well as an exclusive beach club located along the world-famous coastline.

However, the project already faces competition for the title of Australia's tallest building. There is a proposal for a twin-tower project, "One Park Lane," on the same stretch of beach, which would be 50 meters taller and have 101 floors. Work on that rival project is also expected to begin later this year, putting the Trump Organization's claim to the tallest building in question.

Donald Trump has faced ongoing criticism that his company benefits unfairly from his influence as president, despite his promise before the start of his second term that he would not be involved in the management of the business while in office. The Trump Organization has attracted controversy, with accusations that it presents potential conflicts of interest for a sitting president.

In 2021, a congressional committee investigation found that Trump had “grossly overstated” the profits at his Washington, D.C. hotel. The report stated that the hotel had lost more than $70 million during Trump’s first term in the White House, even though he had previously claimed to have earned at least $150 million during that period. The report also found that Trump appeared to have “concealed potential conflicts of interest” related to the hotel’s ownership and his roles as a lender and guarantor of third-party loans. The Trump Organization denied any wrongdoing and called the report “fraudulent.”

The Trump Organization brand is used in more than 20 countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, the Middle East, Asia and major cities in the United States. It focuses on high-end property development and luxury hospitality. In addition to running its own businesses, the company licenses the Trump brand to developers worldwide for residential buildings, hotels and golf courses. Forbes, which tracks the fortunes of billionaires, estimated that Donald Trump's net worth has nearly doubled since 2023.
