Legal packages for EU integration, Minister Dhuka: We will decriminalize defamation against journalists!

Minister of State and Chief Negotiator of Albania, Majlinda Dhuka, stated in a press conference that for the first time Albania will have a new law for the decriminalization of defamation against journalists and for lobbying activities, donations and sponsorships.
" Albania will fully decriminalize the criminal offense of defamation against journalists, increasing protection for journalists in their important mission for free speech and freedom of expression in Albania. While guaranteeing them at the same time a new protection from intimidation due to their duty ," she said.
As part of this package, the minister also announced that after many years Albania will have a special law on lobbying, which aims to regulate interventions in public decision-making, and a new law on donations and sponsorships.
" A registry for lobbying and at the same time for sponsorships and donations will be created, as our effort to increase the dimensions of "Transparent Albania" , she said.
Majlinda Dhuka: This package brings a number of important innovations. For the first time, through this package, Albania will fully decriminalize the criminal offense of defamation against journalists, increasing the protection of journalists in their important mission for free speech and freedom of expression in Albania. At the same time, guaranteeing them new protection from intimidation due to their duty.
A number of EU countries still criminalize defamation, including against journalists, because there are still major challenges to disinformation, especially in the digital age. Albania believes that this change is important for democracy and freedom of expression and strengthening the role of journalists.
After many years, Albania will have a law that will regulate lobbying activity, to regulate interventions in public enterprises. After about 31 years, Albania will have a new law on donations and sponsorship. The existing law is from 1994.
A registry for lobbying and at the same time for sponsorships and donations will be created, as our effort to increase the dimensions of "Transparent Albania".
