Trump increases pressure: 'Greenland, American territory since 2026'

President Donald Trump, who has been pushing for the US to buy Greenland, continued to press the issue on Tuesday.

“I had a very good call with Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, regarding Greenland. We agreed to a meeting of the various parties in Davos, Switzerland. As I have made very clear to everyone, Greenland is essential for National and Global Security. There is no turning back — on that, everyone agrees!” the president declared in part of a post on Truth Social.

Trump is expected to speak at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting on Wednesday.

In another post on Tuesday, Trump shared a graphic that appeared to show Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance standing behind him as he held a US flagpole next to a sign describing Greenland as "US TERRITORY, DUE. 2026."

“Shockingly, our ‘great’ NATO ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give the island of Diego Garcia — the location of a vital US military base — to Mauritius, and will do so WITHOUT ANY REASON,” the president claimed in a separate tweet.

“The UK’s rush to give away hugely important territory is an act of GREAT FOOLISHNESS and is yet another reason, from a very long list of national security reasons, why Greenland should be bought. Denmark and its European allies must DO THE RIGHT THING. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he declared.

Last week, Trump warned of tariffs while continuing to press on the Greenland issue.

“Beginning February 1, 2026, all of the countries named above (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland) will be charged a 10% tariff on all goods shipped to the United States of America. On June 1, 2026, the tariff will increase to 25%. This tariff will be mandatory and payable until an agreement is reached for the full and total purchase of Greenland,” Trump declared in a Truth Social post on January 17.
