Scientist who decoded the human genome and changed science with synthetic DNA

According to the institute, Venter died after being hospitalized due to complications related to treatment for a new form of cancer with which he had recently been diagnosed. Craig Venter is considered one of the scientists who changed the way modern biology is understood. He was a key player in sequencing the human genome and later created the first bacterial organisms with an artificially synthesized genome, an achievement that raised major scientific and ethical debates.

The institute that bears his name said Venter's legacy will continue through further research in genetics and synthetic biology. "Craig believed that science advances when people dare to think differently and build what doesn't yet exist," said JCVI president Anders Dale.

Venter was born on October 14, 1946, in Salt Lake City, USA. During his career, he became a controversial figure in the scientific community for his rapid and often unconventional approach to research, which was sometimes criticized as hasty or exaggerated.

However, his contributions were widely recognized internationally. In 2009, he was awarded the National Medal of Science, one of the highest scientific awards in the United States, by then-US President Barack Obama.

His institute has stated that it will continue work in the fields he initiated, describing Venter as one of the most innovative minds in modern biology.
