"The majority is dragging out the process, Ahmetaj was only given 48 hours"/ Bardhi: With their deadlines, Belinda has time to eat baklava and witnesses
The head of the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, spoke to the media after the end of today's meeting of the Mandates Council, regarding SPAK's request for the arrest of Belinda Balluku.
According to Bardhi, the evidence presented by SPAK will be distributed to all members of the Mandates Council. He emphasized that the majority had maintained that there was no need for the evidence to be collected, while the prosecution had stated that there was no legal obstacle to its distribution.
"The majority requested a month for review. This is a mockery of the process. They are defending a defendant and giving Balluk and Rama time to destroy evidence and intimidate witnesses," declared Bardhi.
He brought up the case of former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj as a comparison, for whom, according to him, there were about 15 thousand pages of material and they were given only 48 hours to review. Bardhi said that SPAK has insisted that Balluk's case is also urgent, arguing that it is intimidating witnesses.
"A person who went to the prosecutor's office and told the truth was intimidated by the defendant Balluku. We cannot give her time to intimidate all the witnesses. She has no more rights than any other MP, who are given 48 to 72 hours in similar cases," said Bardhi.
According to him, the prosecution has assessed that three days are sufficient to review the materials, with a maximum of five days, and has requested that the process be concluded as soon as possible.
Bardhi warned that the opposition will request the convening of an extraordinary session of the Assembly, accusing the majority of deliberately dragging out the process. “They are asking for two weeks just to write the report of the Mandates Council. With these deadlines, the matter is postponed to the end of February,” he said, adding that by then, according to him, “irreparable damage will have been done to the evidence and witnesses.”
"We cannot give her time to intimidate all the witnesses, but she has no more rights than any other MP who has been given 48 to 72 hours in these cases. The defendant can say she wants baklava and turkey, and intimidate witnesses and tear up the papers. The prosecution said that 3 days are enough, but the maximum can be 5 days and they asked for the entire process to be concluded. We will request an extraordinary session of the Assembly, the majority is in no hurry. They are asking for two weeks to write the report of the mandate council. With the deadlines they want to move forward, it is up to them to review this at the end of February. By February, Belinda has eaten baklava, turkey, witnesses and evidence," he said.
