Emigration continues to bring economic benefits to Albanians working abroad, but a recent report by the World Bank and INSTAT shows that these benefits are often accompanied by high job market insecurity. Earnings are higher, but stability and social protection remain fragile.

According to the 2024 Migration Survey, Albanian immigrants earn on average about 2.5 times more than before leaving Albania. However, this salary increase does not automatically translate into secure employment. About 27% of current immigrants work on a limited-duration contract, exposing them to ongoing employment insecurity.

The report’s graphs show that only about 66% of current immigrants have a written contract, while the rest are employed in employment relationships that depend on seasonality, projects or short-term decision-making by the employer. This situation is more prevalent among younger immigrants and those with secondary education, according to the breakdown by age and education level.

Weaknesses in contractual arrangements among expatriates abroad appear to improve with age, reflecting more secure and stable positions over time in the labor market.

Migrants with lower educational levels, specifically those who have not completed upper secondary education, are more likely to be employed on fixed-term contracts, indicating more precarious employment. In contrast, only 16% of migrants with higher education work on such contracts, suggesting greater access to stable employment./ SCAN
