"American English" vs. "British English", Google sparks

Google has opened an unusual discussion among users, after revealing a new project codenamed "Aluminum" (ALOS) and not Aluminum, as is usually expected from an American company.

According to a Google executive, the tech giant is working on a new, unified operating system that will merge Android and ChromeOS "into a single body."

The goal is to create a single platform, based on Android, optimized for both computers and phones, which in the long term will replace ChromeOS and compete directly with Windows and macOS.

A key part of this new system will also be Gemini, Google's artificial intelligence model, which this time will be integrated into the core of the operating system and not simply as a separate application.

But what caught the attention of the community is the choice of the word "Aluminium", the British form of the word, prompting reactions especially from American users.

"Why Aluminum? I can't hear it," complained an American YouTuber, while British users responded with humor: "This is correct English."

The most likely reason is related to the fact that the open source platform behind Chrome is called Chromium, and Google seems to be following the same naming logic.

Moreover, even though the company is headquartered in the US, it seems to have chosen a terminology with more international and scientific nuances, to emphasize the global ambition of the new system.
