The story of Noelia Castillo, the young Spanish woman who lived with great pain, both physical and emotional, ended tragically yesterday.
Severe suffering prompted the young woman to request euthanasia in 2024. On Thursday (yesterday), at the age of 25, her request was granted and her difficult life came to an end.
"I want to go in peace and stop suffering, that's all," Castillo said a few days before his death, in an interview with the Spanish channel Antena 3.
Her case sparked intense debate in Spain, especially after the broadcast of the interview announcing the decision, between those who supported her decision and others who sent her messages on social media urging her not to choose euthanasia.
A life filled with suffering ... The last interview
A few days before her death, she spoke on the Ahora Sonsoles show on the Antena 3 television channel.
In the interview, Castillo explained that her decision was rooted in a turbulent family life, following her parents' separation when she was 13. She spent time in a supervised center, where she was gang-raped by a group of Middle Eastern immigrants.
In October 2022, she attempted suicide. Although she survived, she was left paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. This moment became the turning point that led her to the decision for euthanasia.
"I told you how I want it to be. I want to die beautifully. I'll wear my best dress and I'll be painted. It'll be something simple," she said, adding that she wanted to be alone at the last moment.
"I want to go now and stop suffering, period! None of my family is in favor of euthanasia. What if, with all the pain I've been through over the years, what's the point? I don't want anything... sleeping is very difficult for me and I have pain in my back and legs," she explained.
"I finally made it. Let's see if I can calm down, because I can't stand this family anymore, the pain, everything that torments me. I don't want to be an example to anyone, it's just my life," she said.
He added about his father: "He didn't respect my decision and he never will... Why does he want me alive? To keep me in the hospital?"
She also confessed that she had refused her mother's request to be by her side at the last moment: "I don't want her to see me close my eyes. I would prefer to say goodbye before I leave this life and then, if she wants to come to the funeral."
Noelia Castillo, who had been left paraplegic after a suicide attempt in 2022, underwent euthanasia on Thursday afternoon at a specialized center in Sant Pere de Ribes, Barcelona, where she lived.

Në Barcelonë u zhvillua edhe një tubim i vogël, ku rreth 20 persona vendosën lule dhe u lutën në kujtim të saj.

Vetëvrasja e asistuar është ligjore në Spanjë që nga qershori 2021. Për vajzën aplikimi për eutanazi ishte vetëm fillimi i një procesi të gjatë dhe kompleks, kryesisht për shkak të kundërshtimit nga familja e saj.
Kërkesa e saj u miratua më 18 korrik 2024 nga Komisioni i Garancisë dhe Vlerësimit në Katalonjë, i cili vlerësoi se ajo plotësonte të gjitha kushtet ligjore: një gjendje klinike e pakthyeshme që shkaktonte varësi të madhe, dhimbje dhe vuajtje kronike.
Megjithatë, në gusht të po atij viti, babai i saj, i mbështetur nga një grup fetar konservator, nisi një betejë ligjore për ta ndaluar procesin, duke pretenduar se ajo nuk ishte në gjendje të merrte një vendim të tillë. Babai i saj nisi një proces të gjatë ligjor që vonoi eutanazinë e Noelias për 20 muaj, duke kaluar nëpër pesë nivele gjyqësore: një gjykatë e Barcelonës, Gjykata e Lartë e Drejtësisë e Katalonjës, Gjykata Supreme, Gjykata Kushtetuese dhe Gjykata Evropiane e të Drejtave të Njeriut. “He has not respected my decision and he never will,” Castillo said of her father. “I understand that he is a father, that he would not lose a daughter,” Castillo reflected in her interview. She added that she felt confused because she did not have a close relationship with him. “He ignores me. Why does he want me alive? To keep me in the hospital?” she said.
The battle she waged ultimately enabled her to carry out her decision. "I finally made it and now maybe I can finally rest," she told the Antena 3 journalist. "I can't stand this family anymore, I can't stand the pain anymore, I can't stand everything that's going on in my head."
Castillo said goodbye to her entire family and asked that in her final moments, she be left alone.
"I don't want anyone in" her room, she said. "I don't want them to see me close my eyes."
Euthanasia has been legal in Spain since 2021, under strict conditions and control by special commissions.
According to official data, 426 requests for assisted suicide were approved in 2024.
Noelia's case has reopened the public debate on the limits of the law and the role of the state in dealing with people with serious and irreversible illnesses.
