"Voluntary contributions" under pressure/ Putin forces oligarchs to

Russian President Vladimir Putin is stepping up efforts to secure funding for the continuation of the war in Ukraine, directly appealing to the country's business elite.

According to reports from the Financial Times and The Bell platform, in a closed meeting with major Russian business figures, Putin proposed that oligarchs make so-called "voluntary" contributions to support military needs.

Sources quoted by international media indicate that the idea was promoted by Igor Sechin, one of the most powerful figures in the Russian energy sector. Among the first to respond positively to the request are said to be businessmen Oleg Deripaska and Suleiman Kerimov.
However, the Kremlin's message was clear: the war will continue and more money is needed to finance it, while for big businesses these "contributions" are not really optional.

Refusing to contribute could have serious consequences for companies and their owners.
The development comes at a time when the costs of war for Russia are steadily rising. The Kremlin appears determined to wage a long-term conflict, seeking new sources of funding to support military operations.

Since the start of the war, assets worth around $40 billion have reportedly been seized or transferred under state control from private companies in Russia, a clear signal of growing pressure on the private sector.
