Italian Anti-Mafia Prosecutor: Albanian criminal organizations, the most

The Italian Anti-Mafia prosecutor, Giuseppe Gatti, said that Albanian criminal groups are widespread in Europe and that they operate by the Kanun, combining tradition with modernity.

"We must say it! Albanian criminal organizations are the most consolidated and widespread in the entire European Union. It is an alarming and partly still underestimated phenomenon. These groups have long been considered second-rate organizations, dealing with prostitution or illegal immigration. Today, reality shows us that it is a structured criminal group, capable of taking on a leading role in the field of international drug trafficking. So a group that operates throughout the globe, that interacts with the most important Italian and international mafia organizations," said Gatti in a joint conference with SPAK, after the crackdown on a group that laundered money between Albania and Italy.

According to him, Albanian criminal groups have managed to take on the role of leader thanks to the occupation of Albanian territories where they operate. "After exterminating rival groups, they started the process of leaving the country. We have a connection between the reality of Albanian organizations present in Italy and relations with home. In Albania we have a structured criminal group within which we also have a person who is accused in Italy for the murder in Bari", said Gatti.

He added that these Albanian groups have similarities to Italian mafia groups. "Here too we have a mafia that combines tradition with modernity. A mafia linked to the family, to codes of conduct, to the Kanun, which regulates family and criminal relations. In one part of this investigation, the suspect in this murder justifies the horrific execution by saying that the rules of a contract, not a contract, but a family, were violated," he added.
