A hearing is being held at the Durrës Court to determine security measures for the three suspects for embezzling funds at the Albanian Post branch in Durrës, who have been arrested on charges.
The case concerns Elizabeta Mataj, who was dismissed a few days ago from her position as director of the Albanian Post branch in Durres, the chief financial officer Valbona Doni, and the treasurer Paola Dana. They are accused of having abused around 69 million new lek, funds intended for the distribution of pensions and social assistance.
According to Top Channel, during the court session, the prosecutor in the case presented other details from the investigation, also mentioning former director Mataj's frequenting of casinos.
The latter has not denied that she has frequented such venues, but has stated that there was no legal or contractual prohibition preventing her from going to the casino.
" I am a free citizen. Explain to me what the signed contract is that I cannot go to bars, clubs and casinos ," Mataj declared during the hearing.
Asked by the court where the money that was allegedly embezzled ended up, the former director of the Albanian Post Office in Durrës responded that she did not know.
Meanwhile, the head of finance of the Albanian Post branch in Durrës, Valbona Hoti Duni, is reported to have stated before the court that she did not keep the stolen money, but that the branch director, Elisabeta Mataj, received it in her office.
Meanwhile, investigations continue to uncover how the scheme was carried out, the role of each of those arrested, and the destination of the sum of 69 million lek, which was earmarked for social payments to citizens.
