Financial Times sheds light on G7 meeting: Trump told Zelensky he was impressed

During a dinner last week in Évian-les-Bains, where the G7 summit was held, US President Donald Trump told his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky that he was impressed by Kiev's recent military successes.

The Financial Times reports that Ukrainian officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, believe there are signs that Trump is becoming increasingly inclined to support Kiev more strongly and that he may be more willing to pressure Russia to end the war.

However, they remain cautious when it comes to whether the US president will keep his word, remembering that he has made promises before that he has not kept.

Following meetings between Zelensky, Trump and other leaders, Ukrainian officials say they are moderately optimistic about progress on the delivery of Patriot interceptor missiles and the issuance of licenses for weapons production.

At the G7 summit last week, Trump was “extremely impressed and pleased” by Ukraine’s recent campaign of long-range strikes against targets deep inside Russia, two sources familiar with the leaders’ private conversations told the Financial Times.

Zelensky said after the dinner that Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio "for the first time gave a positive answer to the issue of licenses" for Patriot interceptor missiles.

European capitals have taken advantage of what appears to be a shift in Trump's stance on the war, including his growing conviction that a Russian victory is not inevitable, to drum up stronger support for Kiev.

"When Ukraine is adequately supplied, it can achieve real operational results. Russian defensive lines are not impenetrable," said a senior NATO military official.
