From Latin America to Europe, about 9 tons of cocaine are seized in a submarine in Portugal! Dozens of packages are lost during the sinking

Portuguese authorities have made the largest cocaine seizure ever recorded in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe, after intercepting a "narco-submarine" coming from Latin America.

As part of the operation named "Adamastor", Portuguese authorities seized around 300 packages of cocaine, corresponding to approximately nine tons of narcotics.

The drugs were transported by a semi-submarine, which was seized in the open sea, 230 nautical miles off the Azores Islands.

According to authorities, this amount of drugs could bring traffickers hundreds of millions of euros in profits. The semi-submarine was carrying a total of 300 packages, but about 35 of them were lost at sea when the ship sank.

On board were three Colombian citizens and one Venezuelan, who were rescued before the vessel sank and were later arrested by local authorities.

According to the Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ), the arrested are part of a criminal network and would appear for questioning in Ponta Delgada, in the Azores.

Authorities have not disclosed the final destination of the shipment, but stressed that the drugs were not destined for a single country, but for widespread distribution on the European continent.

The Judicial Police announced that the operation was carried out in cooperation with the Portuguese Navy and Air Force, as part of the fight against intercontinental maritime drug trafficking.

It is the largest cocaine seizure in Portuguese history and one of the largest in Europe.

During a press conference, the director of the National Unit for the Fight against Drug Trafficking (UNCTE), Artur Vaz, stated that 265 packages were recovered, with a total quantity estimated at around nine tons of cocaine.

The operation was also supported by the authorities of the United States (DEA, JIATF-S) and the United Kingdom (NCA), within the framework of MAOC-N, and took place in extremely difficult atmospheric conditions. The Judicial Police emphasized that the investigations continue, in collaboration with international partners, under the supervision of the DIAP of the Azores Region.
