French President: Tensions over Greenland are a strategic awakening for Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for strengthening Europe's defensive posture in the Arctic amid tensions over Greenland, describing the situation as a strategic awakening for all of Europe.
Macron made these statements on Wednesday in Paris, while receiving Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
"Given Russia's stance in the far north, China's economic presence and the strategic consequences of this rapprochement, we agree that we must strengthen our defensive position in the Arctic," Macron said.
He noted that several European countries, including France, have already taken concrete steps in this direction, at the request of Denmark, within the framework of the joint military maneuvers "Arctic Endurance" in Greenland.
According to Macron, Europe must reaffirm its sovereignty and contribution to Arctic security, while simultaneously intensifying efforts to counter foreign interference and disinformation.
"We also support a stronger NATO engagement in the Arctic through the creation of an expanded observation activity," he said, adding that France is ready to participate.
The proposed surveillance mission, known as "Arctic Sentry," had been discussed by NATO member states even before tensions over Greenland escalated following President Donald Trump's demands that the United States buy the world's largest island.
"The European Union must make its contribution to these efforts, including by reviewing its Arctic strategy this year," the French president said.
Trump has justified his stance on Greenland with security arguments, which has prompted European leaders to pledge to strengthen the island's defenses in an effort to defuse the crisis.
