The most expensive milk in the region/ Albanian farmers earn less, subsidies are lower than in neighboring countries

The Albanian farmer sells the most expensive milk in the region, but at the same time he is also the farmer who earns less than his colleagues.
Unlike other countries, our Ministry of Agriculture supports livestock farmers only for the number of heads, while abroad the same farmer receives subsidies for heads, liters of milk, and livestock feed.
Exactly 1 liter of milk on Albanian farms is being sold for 54-58 lek/liter, while production costs are 47-50 lek.
While in North Macedonia a liter of milk costs 47-50 cents, in Kosovo the same product costs 45-48 cents, while in Italy it costs 28-30 cents, and in Hungary the price of milk varies from 11-38 cents.
Faced with these figures, dairy factories prefer to be supplied with imported milk, where during 2025 alone, 8 million liters of milk worth 5 million euros were purchased in the aforementioned countries.
Economic expert, Ndoc Fasllai says: "The cost of producing 1L of milk in Albania compared to countries in the region is 60-70% higher than that realized in countries around us. Under these conditions, it is completely uncompetitive and unequal with imported milk and as such does not find a market."
Listen to the farmers, this is the round of meetings that the Minister of Agriculture, Andis Salla, is holding these days with the people who produce. Days ago he faced the livestock farmers, where their request was clear: to change the support formula. How much the voice of the farmers has been heard remains to be seen when the new national scheme 2026 is presented. Experts say that the Albanian livestock can be saved, and this is done by imitating the policies followed by neighboring countries.
"We need to move to long-term support schemes like those applied in EU countries, where they are linked to a contract offering 3-5 years of support," says Fasalli.
Meanwhile, on many farms, milk has remained unsold, after livestock feed has contaminated the raw material with aflatoxin, a mold that endangers our health and that of the animal./ Top Channel
