Valentino, the famous fashion designer, passes away

Renowned international haute couture designer Valentino Garavani has died in Rome at the age of 93. The news was announced by the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation: "The designer passed away peacefully at his residence in Rome, surrounded by the love of his loved ones."

Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani, known to all as Valentino, was born on 11 May 1932, in Voghera, in the province of Pavia. His passion for fashion, supported by his parents Mauro Garavani and Teresa de Biaggi, led him to study fashion and French, before moving to Paris to pursue new opportunities. This was just the beginning of a long and record-breaking career that made him one of the most legendary names in Italian and international fashion. He was the creator of the most iconic shade of red.

In Paris, Valentino worked as an apprentice to Jean Dessès and Guy Laroche, before returning to Italy to deepen his experience, first with Emilio Schuberth and then with Vincenzo Ferdinandi. The Valentino fashion house was founded in 1957, and in 1959 Valentino opened his first atelier on Via Condotti in Rome.

The beginning was not easy, as the partners, after an initial investment, decided to withdraw. The turning point came with the entry into the company of their partner Giancarlo Giammetti, an architecture student whom Valentino had met in a bar in the capital in 1960.

It was the beginning of a partnership that would last a lifetime. During his long career, Valentino worked with many women of international society, from his long relationship with Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, which began in 1964, to Elizabeth Taylor, Sharon Stone and Linda Evangelista.

After a long career, Valentino Garavani stepped down from running his fashion house in 2007. In July 2012, the house was sold to the Qatari company Mayhoola Investments and in 2023, the Kering group bought 30% of the Valentino Group's shares for 1.7 billion euros. In 2016, together with Giammetti, he created the Valentino Foundation with a purely philanthropic purpose.
