A wealthy Titanic passenger's gold watch sells for £1.78m at auction

A gold pocket watch found on the body of one of the Titanic's wealthiest passengers has sold for £1.78 million, setting a new auction record, the BBC reports.
The watch belonged to Isidor Straus, who along with his wife Ida was among the more than 1,500 victims who lost their lives after the ship, on its voyage from Southampton to New York, collided with an iceberg and sank on April 14, 1912.
His body was found a few days after the tragedy and among his personal belongings was an 18-carat Jules Jurgensen pocket watch. It had been in the family for more than a century until its sale on Saturday at the Henry Aldridge and Son auction house in Devizes, Wiltshire.
Isidor Straus, originally from Bavaria, was an American businessman and politician, as well as co-owner of the famous Macy's department store in New York.
On the night of the sinking, it is believed that his faithful wife, Ida, refused to board a lifeboat, saying she did not want to leave her husband and would rather die beside him. Her body was never found.
Also sold at the same auction was a letter written by Ida Straus on the Titanic's official letterhead and posted during the voyage, which fetched £100,000.
A Titanic passenger list was bought for £104,000, while a gold medal given to the crew of the lifeboat RMS Carpathia by survivors was sold for £86,000.
In total, the auction of Titanic-related items reached a value of 3 million pounds.
