Is Homer's "Iliad" a treasure map?

The ancient Homeric poem, created around the 8th century BC, is so rich in geographical and cultural references that it has led modern archaeologists to extraordinary discoveries.

In 2024, a team of researchers from the National Research Foundation of Greece and the Greek Ministry of Culture managed to identify, thanks to the poem, ten shipwrecks near the island of Kasos, in the Dodecanese archipelago.

An ancient trading hub

According to the Iliad, ships had set sail from this island to participate in the Trojan War.

Starting from this poetic detail and enriching it with other ancient sources, archaeologists began exploring the underwater world of Kasos, discovering remains of ships and goods belonging to very different time periods, from 3000 BC to World War II, including the classical and Byzantine eras.

These findings put Kasos back on the historical map, proving that the island was once a strategic maritime crossroads, connecting Mediterranean trade routes from Spain to ancient Asia. / bota.al
