December 28 elections in Kosovo, investigation begins into votes in the Drenas

The vote recount process for the December 28 snap parliamentary elections in Kosovo has highlighted discrepancies in the results of candidates for deputies in the municipality of Drenas, prompting the Basic Prosecution Office of Pristina to authorize the Kosovo Police to launch investigations.

Kosovo media reports that the Police have been tasked with gathering information and evidence to determine whether there were any criminal violations and who the responsible persons are. The suspicions are related to differences between the initial results and those after the vote recount.

Similar investigations are underway in other municipalities in the country, including Ferizaj and Malisheva, while the Central Election Commission has ordered a full recount of regular votes in several areas due to the discrepancies found.

The most serious case so far has been recorded in Prizren, where 109 people were detained last week on suspicion of manipulating the election results. The court has ordered one-month detention for 23 of them.

The vote counting process was completed on January 9. The votes were processed at the municipal counting centers and at the Counting and Results Center. Each ballot goes through several levels of control, but according to Radio Free Europe, manipulation is suspected to occur mainly at the stage of reading the votes for the candidates.

At this stage, the teller can verbally change the number of the candidate voted for, causing the system to register a vote for another candidate, while the actual ballot remains unchanged. This action does not affect the party's result, but changes the distribution of votes between candidates on the same list, which constitutes a criminal offense under the laws in force.
