Temperatures below zero and snowstorms, Kosovo on alert for bad weather,

Authorities in Kosovo have called for caution in traffic, following the drop in temperatures and snowfall.

On Wednesday evening, the Kosovo Hydrometeorological Institute (IHMK) warned of a drop in temperatures, which it said were expected to cause frost on the roads of Kosovo.

Kosovo Police appealed to citizens to be careful in traffic. This institution appealed to drivers to adapt their speed to weather conditions and road conditions, and to keep a safe distance from other vehicles, due to the possibility of frost.

"Your safety is a priority. Increased caution helps avoid accidents and save lives," the Police said in a statement on social media.

The drop in temperatures comes after devastating floods in some parts of Kosovo.

Meanwhile, the acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, asked citizens to avoid traveling by vehicle in the coming hours due to possible frost on the roads.

In a Facebook announcement, IHMK said that in the coming hours, snow is expected to fall and the wind will blow in the north and northwest direction, accompanied by a significant drop in temperatures throughout Kosovo.

"Minimum temperatures will drop significantly, dropping below zero degrees Celsius, especially during the night and early morning hours. This will create favorable conditions for the formation of frost on road surfaces, sidewalks, bridges and areas exposed to high humidity," the Institute said.

Frost, combined with layers of snow and cold winds, is expected to negatively impact road safety, the IHMK warned.

Meanwhile, Kurti said that "tonight is a critical night in terms of traffic on Kosovo's roads."

"The large contrast in temperatures, with forecasts that they will drop to -9°C, poses an increased risk, as roads wet from rain are expected to freeze," Kurti said.

He called on citizens "to not move tonight unless absolutely necessary. And if they still have to drive tonight, then they should definitely drive carefully, adapting to the weather conditions."

These warnings come a day after the country faced major floods, which also forced authorities to postpone the resumption of classes after the winter break, which was due to resume on Thursday, until January 12.

Heavy rainfall in recent days brought flooding, causing damage to property and infrastructure, evacuations, drinking water problems, and road closures on Tuesday.

The severe weather has not caused any casualties or injuries, authorities said on Wednesday.
