A person is arrested on suspicion of attacking members of KFOR and Kosovo

Kosovo authorities arrested a man on Wednesday on suspicion of attacking members of the NATO peacekeeping mission in the country, as well as the Kosovo Police, during the 2023 protests in the north of the country.

In a brief announcement on Facebook, the Kosovo Special Prosecution Office did not provide further details about the suspect, identifying him only with the initials SR.

He was arrested during an operation between prosecutors and police investigators from the Directorate for Serious and Organized Crime on Wednesday, according to the announcement.

"A search warrant was executed at the suspect's residence, where material evidence was found that will serve during the criminal proceedings," the announcement states.

He has been detained for 48 hours on suspicion of criminal offenses such as conspiracy to commit unconstitutional activities, endangering persons under international protection, participating in a crowd committing a criminal offense and hooliganism, as well as assault on an official.

The prosecution said it will request from the court in Pristina that the suspect be held in custody while the investigation against him continues.

More than 90 KFOR members had suffered injuries – some of them serious – after clashes with Serb protesters in May 2023 in Zvecan.

There were also injuries from this clash on the protesters' side.

The violence in Zvecan erupted after local Serbs opposed the entry of new Albanian mayors into municipal buildings in Zvecan, Leposavić and Zubin Potok – municipalities in northern Kosovo inhabited by a Serb majority – following local elections held earlier that year, which were boycotted by Serbs.

Kosovo authorities have arrested and charged dozens of suspects in the violence in Zvecan over the past year. So far, several people have been sentenced to prison after plea agreements with the prosecution.

Kosovo has blamed Serbia for the violence in Zvecan, saying that behind the violence were "criminal groups close to the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić."

But Belgrade has rejected this accusation, saying that the Kosovo government was aiming to push Serbs "towards a new conflict with NATO." NATO has consistently demanded that the perpetrators of the violence be held accountable./REL
