Severe weather hits Europe, 6 dead

At least six people have died as a wave of unprecedented bad weather has swept across central and southern Europe, as snow, ice and low temperatures continue to cause serious traffic and safety problems.

According to foreign media, authorities in the Landes region in southwestern France have announced that three people have died and 15 others have been injured in road accidents caused by difficult weather conditions. Meanwhile, two more people have died in traffic accidents in the Paris region.

Another victim was recorded in Sarajevo, where a woman lost her life after a snow-covered tree branch broke off and fell on her head.

Heavy snowfall has also caused major disruptions to air transport. In northern and western France, six airports have been temporarily closed, while Paris woke up to a blanket of snow that covered rooftops and the city's main monuments.

The situation is also worsening in the Netherlands, where hundreds of flights have been canceled at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, while staff are working to clear the runways and de-ice planes.
