US President Donald Trump has said his intervention to broker a ceasefire with Iran was aimed at averting a wider global economic crisis, but has denied that the conflict has shown the limits of his power.
In an interview with Axios, Trump was asked what he had learned from the war about the limits of his authority as president. He responded that he does not consider himself limited by recent developments.
"There are no borders. I haven't learned that lesson yet. I know they exist, but there are no borders," Trump said.
The US president also commented on his relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following media reports of disagreements between the two leaders regarding the management of the conflict in the Middle East.
"With Bibi, everything is normal, but we have to keep a clear mind," he declared.
Trump defended his administration's stance during the crisis, claiming that the United States has defeated Iran "completely." According to him, the memorandum of understanding signed between the parties can be considered "almost equivalent to an unconditional surrender."
He also defended the naval blockade previously imposed by the US on Iran, which was lifted after the signing of the memorandum, arguing that it had played an important role in exerting pressure on Tehran.
