Trump determined: US will oversee Venezuela and control oil for years

United States President Donald Trump has stated that Washington intends to maintain long-term influence over Venezuela and control its oil revenues for periods extending "much beyond" a year, following a lengthy interview with The New York Times.
Trump reiterated plans for the US role in the South American country, saying the US administration envisions "overseeing" Venezuela and managing its energy resources in a way he described as "beneficial and profitable."
“Only time will tell” how long the oversight will last, Trump said when asked about the timeframe, adding that he hopes it will last more than a year. He added that the US will use Venezuelan oil, help lower fuel prices and provide funds that he says the country needs.
His comments come days after a US military operation in Venezuela in early January that captured the country's then-president, Nicolás Maduro, sparked international outrage and concerns about Washington's long-term influence on Venezuela's politics and national resources.
Trump also said that the United States is "in constant communication" with the interim government in Venezuela and that the US administration plans to rebuild the country's oil sector "in a very profitable way."
