Greenland government to attend Rubio's meeting with Danish officials on

The Greenland government will attend a meeting expected to take place next week between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Danish officials, at a time of tension over the future of the Arctic island, Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt confirmed today.

"Nothing for Greenland without Greenland. Of course we will participate in the meeting. We were the ones who requested this meeting," Motzfeldt told Danish public television DR, after Rubio confirmed that a meeting with representatives of Denmark would take place.

Meanwhile, the White House announced that President Donald Trump is "very carefully" considering with his team the possibility of "purchasing" Greenland, once again refusing to rule out the military option of giving Washington control over this autonomous Danish territory.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said on Tuesday that the meeting with the US diplomat was expected to “clear up some misunderstandings” that have arisen following Trump’s repeated statements. Rasmussen rejected the US president’s argument that Copenhagen has neglected Greenland’s security, stressing that Denmark has invested heavily in Arctic security over the past 12 months, with around 90 billion Danish kroner (1.2 billion euros).

For Greenland's foreign minister, next week's talks should serve as an opportunity to normalize relations with the United States. "We have already established a direct dialogue with the US," she told the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq.

"My greatest hope is that this meeting will lead to an improvement in our relations. Greenland needs the US and the US needs Greenland, especially in terms of security in the Arctic," Motzfeldt added.

According to the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, Marco Rubio has told US lawmakers that Trump's preferred option remains the purchase of Greenland from Denmark, barring an imminent military invasion.
