Protests in Iran/ Two officers killed, over 2,000 people arrested

On Wednesday evening, violent clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces spread to several cities in Iran, as a wave of unrest sparked by the country's economic crisis continued for an 11th day.

Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency, which is close to the Revolutionary Guard, said two policemen were shot and killed by gunmen in the southwestern city of Lordegan.

Videos posted on social media showed a tense standoff between protesters and security forces, with gunfire echoing in the background. In footage from other areas, security forces appeared to be firing live ammunition and tear gas into crowds of protesters, some of whom threw stones at police.

Protests have so far spread to 111 cities and towns across all 31 provinces of Iran. At least 34 protesters and four security forces have been killed during the unrest, while 2,200 protesters have been arrested.

The protests began on December 28, when merchants and shop owners took to the streets of the capital, Tehran, to express their anger over another significant drop in the value of the Iranian currency, the rial, against the US dollar, while inflation has risen significantly.

University students quickly joined the protests and they began to spread to other cities, with crowds often heard chanting slogans against the country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
