Farmers' protests force Macron to oppose EU-Mercosur deal

Mass protests by farmers have blocked several major roads in France as they opposed a trade deal between the European Union and the Latin American bloc Mercosur, saying the pact harms their interests and favors lower-priced imports, hitting domestic production.

Farmers entered Paris with hundreds of tractors, while vehicle movement on the outskirts of the capital was paralyzed for hours.

Following the pressure of the protests, French President Emmanuel Macron declared that France will vote against the EU-Mercosur agreement in the vote to be held by the Union's member states.

According to Macron, France's decision is clear and is based on the unanimous rejection of the agreement by the French parliament, after more than 25 years of protracted negotiations and without visible benefits for the agricultural sector.
