"A turning point in America"/ DW: Black, protests and warnings in

Throughout the weekend, people in Minneapolis gathered for memorial services, laid flowers and posters in memory of Alex Pretti, who was killed by a federal officer. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz again addressed the press: “Donald Trump — what’s the plan? What do we have to do to get these federal agents out of our state?”

Walz expressed apparent anger at the Trump administration's justification for the shooting of federal officers as self-defense:

"This is a turning point, America. If we can't all agree that it's wrong to defame an American citizen and tarnish everything he stood for. And that we shouldn't believe what we see - then I don't know what else to say."

“What we see” – Walz is referring to the videos of the incident. They show Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse, apparently trying to help a protester. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers tackle him to the ground. Then several shots are fired. Pretti was apparently armed. According to the Minneapolis Police Department, the 37-year-old was a legal gun owner.

But no video shows Prettin pulling out his gun. The footage contradicts what Gregory Bovino, a senior Border Patrol official, said Saturday shortly after the incident: It appears to have been a situation in which someone intended to cause maximum damage and a massacre against law enforcement, Bovino said. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem spoke of domestic terrorism. On Sunday, Bovino was somewhat more cautious, citing the ongoing investigation. But Noem added in a statement on Fox News that federal police officers feared for their lives.

The governor of Minnesota urged citizens to remain calm during the protests. The federal state filed a lawsuit against the actions of the Border Patrol and immigration police. A hearing is scheduled for Monday. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison warned: “If we don’t stop this, it will continue, and it will not be good for anyone in this country.”

It doesn’t look like Donald Trump will pull federal forces out of Minnesota. Instead, in Social Truth, Trump called on Walz and other Democratic governors and mayors to cooperate with his administration instead of “fanning the flames of division, chaos, and violence.” Democratic members of Congress are now threatening to block the budget bill to prevent additional funding for ICE.

The deployment of border patrol and immigration police to cities governed largely by Democrats is part of US President Donald Trump's plan to carry out the largest deportation operation in US history. In Minnesota, 37-year-old Alex Pretti was the second person killed in less than three weeks. On January 7, ICE officers shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good./DW
