Who was Alex Pretty, the 37-year-old nurse who was shot and killed by federal agents in Minneapolis?

The 37-year-old man who was killed Saturday morning in Minneapolis during a shootout with federal agents has been identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretty, a U.S. citizen and resident of Minnesota, Minneapolis police confirmed.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday when a fight broke out between Pretty and multiple federal agents, including Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. During the incident, the 37-year-old was fatally shot and died at the scene.

New footage circulating on social media in recent hours purports to capture part of the altercation before the shooting and has sparked fierce reactions. According to the allegations accompanying the video, Pretti is alleged to have failed to draw his legally registered firearm, even when being attacked by agents.

The 37-year-old allegedly stepped in to help a woman when an officer allegedly pushed another person. He was then allegedly physically attacked, pepper sprayed and chased as he allegedly fled.

According to public records, Pretty worked as a nurse at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Minneapolis, part of the Veterans Health Service. In 2023, he reportedly had an annual salary of $90,783. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, and his LinkedIn profile recently listed him as a “young scientist.”

Colleagues describe him as a man with dedication to patients and a strong sense of duty.
