Canadian PM: Trump's tariff threats are part of negotiating strategy

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has downplayed former US President Donald Trump's recent threats to impose 100% tariffs, stating that they should be seen as part of a negotiating strategy within the framework of trade relations.

"We will soon begin negotiations or a review of our agreement with the United States and Mexico (USMCA)," Carney declared.

He stressed that Trump's positions should be interpreted in a broader political and economic context. "The president is an experienced negotiator. I think some of these comments and threats should be seen within that framework," the Canadian prime minister added.

Donald Trump threatened on Saturday to impose "100% tariffs" on imports from Canada to the US if Ottawa reaches a trade deal with China.

This reaction came after Carney announced in mid-January that Canada had reached a preliminary agreement with Beijing, opening a new chapter in economic cooperation between the two countries.

Recent statements have increased tensions in trade relations between Washington and Ottawa, while negotiations to revise the USMCA agreement are expected to begin in the coming months.
