Israel strikes Gaza, two Palestinians killed

Two Palestinians were killed today in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City, local authorities said. The Israeli Armed Forces (IDF) said the target of the attack was a Hamas member, whom they hold responsible for an attack on Israeli soldiers earlier in the day.

Medical sources in the Palestinian territory reported that there were also injuries after the shelling hit a house in a populated neighborhood of the city. The identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed.

International media reports that an IDF spokesman argued that the target was a Hamas commander, suspected of giving the order for the attack on Israeli troops.

Meanwhile, in Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, an Israeli-backed Palestinian group announced it had killed two Hamas militants during exchanges of fire.

Tensions between the parties are rising again. Israel and Hamas continue to accuse each other of violating the ceasefire reached on October 10, after two years of fighting in the Palestinian territory.

According to authorities in Gaza, more than 400 Palestinians – mostly civilians – have been killed in the past three months, while Israel reports three soldiers killed in the same period.

On the ground, the ceasefire appears increasingly fragile, while violence between the parties risks escalating the region again.
