Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro leaves hospital after hitting head, returns to prison

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was returned to prison on Wednesday after undergoing a series of medical examinations in hospital for a blow to the head after a fall. His wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, announced the news in a post on Instagram.
According to his doctor, Brazil Caiado, examinations carried out at a hospital in Brasilia – including a CT scan and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan – revealed a mild traumatic brain injury. He stressed that the condition is not worrisome and that no intracranial injury has been detected.
Doctors suspect that Bolsonaro may have felt dizziness and loss of balance, related to the medications he is taking to treat hiccups, Caiado explained.
The temporary release from prison for examinations was granted by Brazilian Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes after Bolsonaro was hit in the head on Tuesday evening, according to a court ruling published on Wednesday. De Moraes had previously rejected a request for immediate transfer to hospital, arguing that there was no medical emergency.
Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year prison sentence for planning a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In December, the former president underwent several medical procedures to treat a hernia and hiccups. He also has a long history of health problems, dating back to a stab wound to the abdomen during a campaign rally in 2018, which has led to several hospitalizations and surgeries over the years.
