Iran warns of speedy trials for arrested protesters: Zero tolerance for culprits

The head of Iran's judiciary promised today that trials of protesters arrested during the country's latest wave of demonstrations will be set "as soon as possible," warning that there will be "zero tolerance" for those found guilty.

"The people rightly demand that the accused and the main instigators of the riots, as well as terrorist and violent acts, be brought to justice as soon as possible," Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei declared, according to the Mizan agency, the media organ of the Iranian judicial system.

He stressed that the investigations will be conducted with the "greatest severity", adding that justice must judge and punish without any mercy "the criminals who took up arms, killed people or committed arson, destruction and massacres".

Human rights groups estimate that thousands, even tens of thousands, of people were arrested during anti-government protests, which reportedly left thousands dead, in early January. At the time, state television broadcast footage of Ejei personally interrogating detainees.

Non-governmental organizations based outside Iran have denounced the bloody suppression of the protests, but emphasize that it is difficult to give an accurate assessment, as the internet in the country continues to be down.

According to multiple accounts, security forces shot protesters with live ammunition. However, the head of the police special forces, Colonel Mehdi Sharif Kazemi, stated today that "in reality, the police did not use firearms."

"We used non-lethal means to ensure the safety of the population and avoid any loss of life," he told the Mehr agency, citing "prevention tools such as water cannons, paintball guns and vehicles equipped with sound systems for crowd management."
