Europe sides with Denmark: Greenland belongs to its people

Europe has reacted with a common stance to US President Donald Trump's statements on Greenland, emphasizing that the Arctic island belongs to its people and that any decision-making about it belongs solely to Denmark and Greenland.

In the joint statement, the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Great Britain and Denmark stated that Greenland's sovereignty cannot be questioned.

"Only Denmark and Greenland have the right to decide on matters relating to Denmark and Greenland," the statement said.

The reaction comes after Trump's renewed interest in taking control of the autonomous Danish territory. European leaders stressed that security in the Arctic must be guaranteed collectively, through cooperation with NATO allies, including the United States.

"NATO has made it clear that the Arctic region is a priority and European allies are increasing their commitment," it is further underlined.

Meanwhile, in a statement to The Atlantic, Trump stated that the US needs Greenland for defensive reasons, a statement that has prompted strong reactions and clear European support for Denmark.
