Europe hit by storms and travel chaos, 6 dead from bad weather

Various parts of Europe are facing bad weather, which quickly took away the joy of the holidays.

On the day of the blessed water, the fury of nature hit the Balkan basin hard, causing heavy rain and snow, power outages and one victim in Bosnia, a woman who lost her life in the storm. After almost 40 centimeters of snow fell on the capital Sarajevo, the woman in question died in hospital after being hit by a tree that fell under the weight of the snow. The heavy snowfall paralyzed part of the movement in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport reported the cancellation of around 600 flights as crews worked tirelessly to clear runways and melt ice from planes waiting to take off. More snow was forecast for the rest of the week. France has already recorded the heaviest death toll, with five deaths. With the cold making roads extremely dangerous, three people died in black ice-related accidents in the southwest of the country, while a taxi driver died in hospital after his vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a river in the Paris region.

In Rome, weeks of rain have caused the Tiber River to rise again, dampening celebrations for Pope Leo XIV. St. Peter's Square was only partially filled with people on Tuesday, gathered under umbrellas to listen to the Holy Father as he gave the Epiphany blessing. Rome has been battered by persistent rain since before Christmas, prompting Mayor Roberto Gualtieri to issue an order restricting public access to parks and other areas at risk from falling trees and flooding. Temperatures have also plummeted in the United Kingdom, with temperatures in the north dipping to minus 12.5 degrees Celsius, as snow disrupted rail, road and air travel and closed hundreds of schools.

Rain and snow have also continued to wreak havoc in the Balkans; in Serbia, several western municipalities imposed emergency measures due to bad weather, while strong winds and rough seas battered the Adriatic coastline in Croatia and Montenegro.
