4 years since the start of the war, Rutte: Ukraine needs more help

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, on the 4th anniversary of the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, declared that the Alliance will continue to stand by Kiev "in the face of every challenge that awaits it."

In his message, Rutte stressed that it is vital that Ukraine continues to receive the necessary military, financial and humanitarian support, while adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin "must prove whether he is truly serious about peace."

"We gathered this morning to mark another tragic anniversary. Four years of ruthless war. Today – like every day – we remember everything that Ukraine has endured. But as we honor the fallen and those who continue to suffer, we also maintain hope, inspired by four years of indomitable resilience and unwavering determination," Rutte said.

He recalled that just a few weeks after the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, he had spoken in the Ukrainian parliament, emphasizing that this war is about the right of a sovereign people to choose their future.

"I said then that this war is about freedom – yours and ours. That remains just as true today," he stressed.

Rutte said he had visited Ukraine again three weeks ago, where he had seen firsthand the consequences of Russian attacks on residential areas and energy infrastructure. He said he had met with residents of the village of Yahidne, survivors of the Russian occupation, and paid tribute to those who fell on Maidan.

"Ukraine is a country of silent heroes, where civilians and soldiers alike shoulder the burden of this war," he declared.

According to the NATO chief, international support must be intensified. "For Ukraine to be protected from air strikes and to hold the front line, this assistance is essential. Promises do not stop the war. Ukraine needs ammunition today and every day, until the bloodshed stops," Rutte said.

He added that, despite the Kremlin's statements, Russia has not achieved its strategic objectives on the battlefield. Finally, Rutte stressed that US President Donald Trump has also expressed a desire to end the conflict.
