What seemed like the beginning of a classic love story came to a swift end, perhaps due to the 'evil eye'. Midfielder Derrickson Quiros, from Club Xelaju, a first division team in Guatemala, announced the end of his engagement just three days after proposing to his girlfriend on the pitch.
Quiros went viral on social media when he knelt down in the middle of the field and received a 'yes' that was accompanied by applause and kisses, but the happiness only lasted 72 hours.
Three days after the incident, Quiros took to his social media to confirm the end of the relationship. The footballer requested privacy and stressed that his attention is now focused exclusively on football.
"I am now focused on my career, my team and continuing to grow as a person. I appreciate people's support and hope they respect this moment. Thank you," he wrote, among other things.
The player's ex-fiancée also took to the internet to deliver the message. On her social media, she chose a cryptic message. "In the end, there will never be a better answer than the one that silence offers."
