Mario Mërkuri, the father of 20-year-old Albanian Rikardo Mërkuri, who brutally raped his mother in Italy and then drowned at sea, has revealed details about the serious incident.
He told Italian media that his son committed the fatal act after thinking he had caused his mother's death during a violent conflict in the apartment.
"He thought his mother was dead and made that gesture. He was determined," his father said.
The incident occurred on the evening of February 22, just a few hours after the family had celebrated the young man's birthday together.
After dinner, the father left the house and, according to family members, a heated argument broke out between the mother and son that ended in physical violence. Albana Kastriot was later found by her husband lying unconscious in the bathroom, with serious injuries to her face.
She was initially transported to the hospital in Macerata and then transferred to the Torrette regional hospital in Ancona, where she is expected to undergo maxillofacial surgery. According to her husband, her condition has improved and is out of danger.
"Her mother loved her madly. Even when she was wrong, she always protected her," the father added, emphasizing that there had been arguments between them before, but nothing to suggest that the situation could end in tragedy.
The 20-year-old's body has been in the morgue of Civitanova Hospital since Sunday, while investigations continue to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident.
The family, of Albanian origin and settled in Pollenza for many years , is well-known in the local community. In addition to his parents, Rikardo leaves behind his older brother Alessio and grandmother Bedrie. The event has left the city in shock and has opened a wide debate on the causes that led to this tragic end.
