2022-2026/ Ukraine-Russia war, over 2 million casualties

The war between Ukraine and Russia has so far caused nearly 2 million military casualties, including killed, wounded and missing, according to a study published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), cited by The Guardian.
According to the study, Russian forces have suffered the greatest losses, with about 325,000 killed, out of a total of about 1.2 million Russian casualties since the start of the war in 2022. In total, combined Russian and Ukrainian casualties could reach up to 1.8 million, while the figure is projected to reach 2 million by the spring of 2026.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told NBC that Ukraine has lost about 46,000 soldiers since 2022, with tens of thousands more missing or captured. Meanwhile, Russian losses continue to be kept a state secret by Moscow.
BBC Russia and independent media outlet Mediazona, which rely on open sources, have identified over 163,000 Russian soldiers killed, but stress that the real number is likely much higher.
Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that a Russian drone attack on a passenger train in northeastern Ukraine has killed five people. The attack took place near a village in the Kharkiv region, and Ukrainian authorities have described the act as terrorism.
Zelenskyy announced on Telegram that the train was carrying more than 200 passengers, adding that such attacks undermine diplomatic efforts to end the war.
"Any such Russian attack undermines diplomacy and the efforts of our partners to stop this war," the Ukrainian president wrote.
The train bombing was part of a wave of Russian drone and missile attacks on several Ukrainian cities that have left a total of 10 dead and dozens injured. In Odessa, three people were killed and 32 others were injured by a drone strike that also caused extensive material damage.
Meanwhile, Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has asked Elon Musk to cut off Russia's access to the Starlink satellite service. The request comes after the US Institute for the Study of War stated that the Russian military is using Starlink terminals to conduct drone attacks on Ukrainian territory.
