After Nestle, several companies recall baby milk, suspicions of contamination

After Nestle, major dairy companies, such as Danone, Lactalis and Vitagermine, have begun withdrawing powdered infant milk from the market due to suspicions of contamination with cereulide, a harmful toxin that causes vomiting and diarrhea, usually 30 minutes after consumption.
The contamination is suspected to have started in early December, and has been traced to a Chinese supplier of ARA oil, a key ingredient in premium infant formulas.
As a result, by the end of 2025, formula manufacturers around the world have been required to conduct risk analyses.
Nestle has recalled hundreds of products from its infant formula lines in several European countries, including Albania.
Danone has also recalled several types of infant formula produced in Ireland, especially well-known brands such as Aptamil or Nutrilon, for the same reasons.
Other manufacturers, including Vitagermine, have also recalled certain types of baby formula as a precaution.
This is considered one of the biggest global infant food safety crises in recent years.
Meanwhile, authorities in France have launched investigations into two cases of deaths of infants who had consumed milk formula from the recalled types, although a causal link between the consumption of the formula and the case has not yet been confirmed.
The cereulide toxin is produced by strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus and is heat-stable, meaning it is not destroyed during the preparation of formula with boiling water, which at higher levels due to consumption can create a risk of gastrointestinal symptoms in infants.
