Almaty's largest art museum opens

The grand Almaty Art Museum has opened its doors in the Kazakh capital, marking a significant moment in the region's cultural life, founded by businessman and philanthropist Nurlan Smagulov, according to Euronews.
The museum exhibits over 700 works from Kazakhstan and Central Asia, alongside works by renowned international artists.
With a wide range of media, genres, and perspectives, the museum aims to serve as a hub for contemporary art in the region.
The museum building, located near the Tian Shan mountain range, is a work of art in itself.
Designed by British company Chapman Taylor and built over three years, the 10,600 square meter complex consists of two intertwined wings, one made of Jura stone and the other of aluminum, symbolizing Almaty's mountainous landscape and urban environment.
Before visitors step inside, large art installations give a taste of the experience that awaits them inside.
The museum's opening is accompanied by two main exhibitions.
The first, “Qonaqtar” (The Invited), focuses on artists of the 1960s and presents nomadic culture, daily rituals, and traditional festivals, while also reflecting the impact of Soviet restrictions on the region’s artistic heritage.
The key work is the photograph “On Virgin Soil. Lunchtime” by Salikhitdin Aytbayev, which deals with the Soviet campaign to cultivate the open lands of the steppe.
The second exhibition, Almagul Menlibayeva’s retrospective titled “I understand everything,” presents a multidisciplinary artist who blends Eurasian myths, shamanic imagery, and post-Soviet realities. Her works address identity, memory, and cultural resistance, offering a multidimensional perspective on Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
The museum also dedicates spaces to international artists, including works by Richard Serra, Anselm Kiefer, Yayoi Kusama, and Bill Viola, creating a dialogue between local and global art.
Large installations, immersive environments, and the use of diverse materials provide a deep and reflective experience for visitors.
The Grand Museum of Almaty aims to become a vibrant center of art and dialogue in Central Asia.
