"The Life of Bela" for Tirana media

If someone were to take the trouble to compile a manual to discover which media outlets have marketed their profession, it would be very easy to base it on just two cases: the way they have behaved, initially with the problems that Erion Veliaj and now, more recently, Belinda Balluku have had in relation to justice.

Both the former and the latter have as a common characteristic a comforting silence from most television stations and online sites towards them.

Initially, when the scandal involving the 5D directors was revealed, no one did an evening show, or even reported the news. The same situation was repeated when it was learned that Belinda Balluku would be arrested by SPAK. Although everyone knew the irreversible decision, most of them hid behind their fingers until the announcement of the deputy prime minister's indictment was made.

Likewise, the intermediate phase, from Veliaj's first arrest at the door of the special prosecutor's office to his handcuffs, is as similar as two drops of water to what is happening now with Balluk. Instead of talking about the file, the accusations, the suspicions of abuse or even the objections surrounding them, a large part of the screens presented them in official meetings with Rama, at international activities, to create the false illusion of normality. Today, the same media that try to bury Bela's file are promoting with big headlines a train trip to Switzerland, an international meeting in Athens, a joint activity with the prime minister.

In a normal environment, the exact opposite should have happened. All the facts that emerged should have passed through the sieve of the fourth estate. It should have been analyzed how it is possible that the number two of the government was present at every step of the manipulation of a tender, how she controlled the cancellation, the staggering increase of the amount by 50 million euros, the selection of the winners, the trick of introducing a competitor for the sake of fake papers and then his "de facto" withdrawal.

Finally, BIRN (read link below) has published an investigation questioning the safety of the works in the Llogora tunnel, which if proven true, could produce a scenario similar to that of the collapse of the train station shelter in Novi Sad, Serbia, which should also produce a debate between those who have alarming facts and others who give guarantees that everything is OK.

So, having said that, no one is claiming that Belinda Balluku should lack the protection and commitment of those who line up in her favor. As long as she is still presumed innocent, it would be normal for there to be journalists and media outlets that would present her version.

But this is not happening here, instead of a democratic discussion, with pros and cons, Belinda has decided to buy silence. It is precisely the acceptance of this condition that constitutes the darkest stain on a large part of our media. By choosing with free will to broadcast images of Veliaj inaugurating a school, while he was handcuffed, or Balluk on a speeding train, while she had received a summons to SPAK, they only scream in the eyes of their followers that they are not information houses, but sales kiosks. They prove to what extent the credibility of the fourth power in the country has degraded.

But no matter how bleak or sad this situation may seem, as happens with the deepening of any evil, it naturally produces the opposite effect. This absurd phenomenon serves to sharpen the public's senses to read through the unspoken and what is hidden from them.

From the way the media is treating Belinda Balluku, two simple conclusions can be drawn. The first is that she feels guilty, so she is trying to buy her silence at a high price. And the second is to more easily expose those TV and online newspapers that have turned their mission into a bargain./ Lapsi.al
